The EBA updates data used for the identification of global systemically important institutions (G-SIIs)
Introduction
The European Banking Authority (EBA) has released updated data for identifying global systemically important institutions (G-SIIs) within the European Union. This update includes 13 indicators for the 32 largest institutions, each with a leverage ratio exposure exceeding EUR 200 billion.
Key Updates and Trends
The end-2024 data shows a 3.4% increase in total exposures among banks, with significant growth in trading volumes and other financial indicators. These updates assist competent authorities in identifying G-SIIs, following decisions by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS) and the Financial Stability Board (FSB).
Regulatory Framework and Implications
The identification of G-SIIs leads to higher capital buffer requirements, which will apply approximately one year after the publication of bank-specific results. The EBA ensures transparency in the financial market by providing accessible disclosure tools and exceeding BCBS standards.
